The wedge-tailed eagle is the largest bird of prey found in Australia and ranks among the world's most impressive eagle species. Instantly recognisable by the long, wedge-shaped tail that gives the bird its name, it boasts a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres and powerful legs feathered right down to its feet. A master of soaring flight, the wedge-tailed eagle can remain airborne for hours by riding warm thermal currents above Australia's sun-baked landscape, often reaching altitudes exceeding 2,000 metres.

Design

The reverse has been sculpted by renowned American engraver John M. Mercanti and showcases an enhanced ultra-high relief design featuring the silhouettes of two magnificent birds of prey. The Australian wedge-tailed eagle occupies the foreground, while a bald eagle is positioned behind it, with both birds facing to the right. Impressive gold gilding highlights both the design and the outer rim, creating a striking contrast against the silver surface. The reverse also includes the inscription 'AUSTRALIAN WEDGE-TAILED EAGLE', The Perth Mint's 'P' mintmark, together with the coin's weight, fineness and 2026 year-date.

Technical Information

To produce the coin's exceptional ultra-high relief, the reverse is struck on a specially formed concave surface. This advanced minting process promotes optimal metal flow during striking, allowing the intricate design to be rendered with remarkable depth and precision.
