Anastasius I was Byzantine Emperor from 491 to 518 AD, known for his administrative skill and financial reforms. Originally a palace official, he was chosen to succeed Emperor Zeno and married the late emperor’s widow, Ariadne. His reign marked a period of stability after years of turmoil.

Anastasius reformed the empire’s tax system, eliminated unpopular levies, and introduced a new, stable currency—the copper follis—which improved economic conditions. He was also a devout Christian, though his support for Monophysitism created religious tension with Orthodox factions.

Militarily, Anastasius strengthened the empire’s eastern frontier by building the Anastasian Wall to defend against invasions. Despite conflicts with the Isaurians and later the Sassanids, he maintained overall peace and prosperity. When he died at the age of 88, he left the empire with a full treasury and a strengthened administrative structure, setting the stage for the reigns of Justin I and Justinian I.
