The delicate creature

The Ulysses butterfly (Papilio ulysses) is a striking swallowtail species renowned for its vivid electric-blue wings, making it one of the most iconic butterflies of Australia and nearby regions. Native to Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands, this butterfly is also known as the blue emperor or blue mountain swallowtail. Its wingspan typically reaches about 14cm, with the upper wings shimmering in iridescent blue while the underside remains a more muted brown, providing camouflage when at rest. The dazzling colouration comes from microscopic scales that reflect light, creating its signature glow. The Ulysses butterfly is often seen fluttering through tropical rainforests and gardens, especially where native citrus trees grow.

Vivid butterfly design

The coin’s coloured reverse features a magnificent Ulysses butterfly at its centre, accompanied by three smaller butterflies in flight. Surrounding the scene are vibrant depictions of native flora, including the golden blooms of Goodenia and the delicate pink blossoms of Euodia, celebrated as the Ulysses butterfly’s favourite food. Struck design elements include the distinctive Cape York lily and the graceful Bower of Beauty species. Included in the design is a ribbon scroll with the inscription ‘BUTTERFLY’, along with the coin’s weight, purity, 2026 year-date and The Perth Mint’s ‘P’ mintmark.
