A bend, a taniwha, a bend a taniwha’ These words are part of a very famous tribal axiom associated with the Waikato Tainui peoples and the Kingitanga Movement. The proverb likens the many highly influential rangatira (chiefs) who resided in this tribal region to taniwha living at every bend in the Waikato river. The Waikato river flows along the full length of the Waikato Tainui tribal lands starting at lake Taupo and exiting to the Tasman sea at Port Waikato. There are many tribal narratives across Aotearoa New Zealand which speak of Taniwha which dwell in rivers, lakes and different parts of the moana (ocean) surrounding the country.
