2012 $1 Endangered and Extinct Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle 1oz Silver Coloured Proof Coin
Tax included.
The Tasmanian Wedge-Tailed Eagle (Aquila audax fleayi) is an endangered subspecies found only in Tasmania. Larger than its mainland relatives, it has a wingspan of up to 2.5 metres, making it Australia’s largest bird of prey. Once widespread, its numbers declined due to habitat loss, persecution, and reduced nesting sites. Fewer than 1,000 mature birds are believed to survive today. While not extinct, some local populations have vanished, highlighting the urgent need for protection of breeding areas and old-growth forests.
