The Battle of the Coral Sea, fought from 4–8 May 1942, was a pivotal naval engagement of the Second World War and the first fought entirely by aircraft carriers. It marked the first time opposing fleets never saw or fired directly upon one another. Allied forces, led by the United States and Australia, successfully halted Japan’s southward expansion toward Port Moresby. Although losses were heavy on both sides, the battle prevented a strategic Japanese victory and safeguarded Australia from direct invasion threat. Crucially, it shifted momentum in the Pacific, setting the stage for the decisive Battle of Midway one month later.
