“Gothic” refers to the distinctive font style used for the serial numbers on the $20 1985 Johnston/Fraser banknotes. The “Gothic” print features thicker, more angular characters compared to the later “OCR-B” style, which has a cleaner, more modern look. Collectors distinguish between these varieties because they represent different production runs, with the Gothic serial style generally being scarcer and of particular interest when found in high-grade, consecutive, uncirculated pairs.
