1996 Belgrade Olympics Gold Medallion

This intriguing 1996 gold medallion, struck in 90% gold and weighing 8 grams, is a fascinating piece of modern Olympic history. The obverse features the iconic Olympic rings above the inscription "BEOGRAD '96", with the historic Coat of Arms of Belgrade below. The reverse depicts a standing nude male figure holding a dove, symbolising peace, and a sword, representing strength and determination.

While not an official Olympic issue, the medallion is believed to have been produced to commemorate Belgrade's ultimately unsuccessful bid to host the 1996 Summer Olympic Games.
