1988 Calgary Winter Olympics 10 Coin Sterling Silver Set

The Royal Canadian Mint issued this impressive 10-coin sterling silver proof set to commemorate the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympic Games. Produced between 1985 and 1987, each coin carries a $20 Canadian face value and is struck from .925 sterling silver.

Each coin weighs 34.1 grams, meaning the complete 10-coin set contains 341 grams of sterling silver alloy, equivalent to approximately 315.4 grams (10.14 troy ounces) of pure silver.

The set features ten different winter sports, including downhill skiing, speed skating, ice hockey, biathlon, cross-country skiing, freestyle skiing, figure skating, curling, ski jumping and bobsleigh. Each reverse depicts athletes in action, while the obverse features the second-generation effigy of Queen Elizabeth II.

The coins are also notable for introducing edge lettering to Canadian silver coinage, reading XV OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES – JEUX OLYMPIQUES D'HIVER. Typically presented in a green felt or leatherette case with a certificate of authenticity.
