The 1909 Melbourne Mint Half Sovereign was struck during the reign of King Edward VII, following the death of Queen Victoria in 1901. Melbourne Mint had become an established producer of British gold coinage, using gold sourced from Australia’s rich mining fields.
Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin features Sir George William De Saulles’ portrait of Edward VII on the obverse, with the traditional St George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci on the reverse.
