The 1887 Melbourne Mint Gold Half Sovereign was issued during Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee year, marking 50 years of her reign. By this time, the Melbourne Mint had become an important part of Australia’s gold coinage industry, refining locally sourced gold and producing coins to Imperial standards.
Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin features Queen Victoria’s Jubilee Head portrait, introduced in 1887, together with the traditional crowned shield reverse.
