The 1882 Sydney Mint Gold Sovereign was struck during the reign of Queen Victoria, when the Sydney Mint was an important producer of British gold coinage in Australia. Established in 1855, it transformed locally mined gold into sovereigns and half sovereigns for circulation throughout the Empire.
Struck in 22-carat gold, the coin features Queen Victoria’s Young Head portrait by William Wyon on the obverse and the classic St George and the Dragon design by Benedetto Pistrucci on the reverse.
