Struck in 1799 at Matthew Boulton’s Soho Mint, this copper issue features the laureate portrait of King George III engraved by Conrad Heinrich Küchler, paired with his classic seated Britannia reverse. Produced to alleviate Britain’s chronic small-change shortages, Soho copper coins were widely exported and frequently travelled far beyond their place of origin. Importantly for Australian collectors, coins of this type are believed to have circulated in early colonial New South Wales during the Proclamation Period (1800–1813), when a diverse mix of foreign and British coinage was used in daily trade. As such, it represents a genuine link to Australia’s earliest monetary history.
